Goa Hotels : What to see in Goa : Anjuna Beach

Anjuna Beach

Location : 20 km from Panaji.
Best Time To Visit : November - March.
Attractions : Chapora Fort, Albuquerque Mansion and the water sports activities.

Anjuna beach is situated 20 km away from Panaji , 8 km west of Mapusa and is located in Bardez taluka. Anjuna beach was discovered by the hippies in the late 1950s to mid 1960s. It is located on the 30 km long beach coastline along the west coast of Goa. Flea market and the full moon beach parties are main attraction of the Anjuna beach. You can get anything from swim suits to water sports equipment to second hand bikes to cameras etc. from the Flea market. This is a weekly market arranged on Wednesdays. Tourists enjoy shopping there.

For accommodation, only local houses are available at Anjuna beach but you can stay at the hotels and resorts located on main Starco’s crossroads. It is recommended to stay at the accommodation available in Calangute, Baga, Vagator or Chapora. There are small outlets serving sumptuous seafood and home made food. Some palm leafed huts offers fish cuisine and western food.

Chapro Fort , just adjecent to the beach, is a nice place to see. Besides this, The Albuquerque mansion is also an interesting place. Enjoy water sports activities such as paragliding and windsurfing etc.

Further north is Anjuna, the one-time hippie capital of India. It is accessible by bus from Mapusa (20 minutes). From Panjim, driving to Anjuna takes about 40 minutes. Anjuna is approachable from its main beach, or via the venue of the famous Wednesday flea-market further south.
A western idea transplanted to tropical climes, the flea-market comes to life in the fair-weather tourist season. In the adjoining villages of Arpora-Baga are the rather interesting Saturday night markets. The book Goa Freaks by Cleo Odzer gives an insight into Anjuna's hippy days. Last Hippy Standing is a documentary film with considerable footage of this region.

Earlier, raves and all-night parties used to happen around the full-moon nights during the winter months. Now, these seem more commercialised and geared to the tourist season, official statements against the*same notwithstanding.

Popular places where the crowd goes for entertainment include the Shore Bar, Guru Bar and Loodas.

How To Reach :
There are bus services available from Mapusa and Panjim to Chapora at the Main Starco’s crossroads. From starco’s crossroads, you can take taxi, motorcycle to reach the village.
